ABOUT SCRATCHBOARD ART

Scratchboard consists of three layers: the bottom layer is masonite, the middle layer is a super fine white kaolin clay and the top and final layer is black india ink. To create her subjects, Danielle uses different sizes of blades (exacto blades, tattoo needles, wire brush, etc) to scratch away the black ink, revealing the white clay underneath. Danielle creates all of her pieces freehand! Occasionally, she will paint over the white clay for added color but tends to prefer the timeless look that black and white offers.
While it isn't uncommon for artists to paint over mistakes, Danielle's style is such that she uses a firm pressure on her blades which leaves a deep mark in the kaolin clay. This makes it difficult to cover up any unwanted scratches. Once a scratch is made, it is considered permanent.
